A short post today because it’s an easy answer to a reader question.
How should you respond to “How old are you?” when you’re on a date? Should I even tell her?
The question comes from an older person who’s gotten divorced and is re-entering the dating market.
All women want to know your age, so you gotta tell her something.
Guys who tell you “Make her guess but don’t give her a real number” don’t get that when you’re older, not giving her a real answer seems like you’re making a big deal out of the question and trying to hide your age.
Not giving her a proper answer makes you seem insecure when you’re out of the usual dating age range. If that’s you, you gotta give her a number instead of making her play the guessing game.
A man’s peak dating age range is from his late 20s to his early 30s. Say 26 to 34 if you want a wide range.
Before 25, a man’s face doesn’t have the look of maturity, and after 35, he’s no longer considered “young blood” by any reasonable measure.
The magic age for men is 28 (for women it is 22). It’s when you have enough money to spend, freedom to enjoy your life, and you have plenty of your peak years ahead of you.
This is the age you should reach for when a girl asks you your age.
If you are 21, say you are 24.
If you are 24, say you are 26.
If you are 26, say you are 28.
If you are 30, say you are 28.
If you are 35, say you’re 32.
If you are 40, say you are 35.
If you are 50, go with 44.
Shift your age towards 28, whether you are on a dating app or talking to a woman in person. Of course whatever number you go with needs to be believable. If you look 50 and claim to be 30, it doesn’t work.
Don’t sweat the “ethics” of the situation here. Unless you’re both looking for a long term relationship, you get no brownie points of being honest about your age.
She’s there on the app because she wants something casual, but doesn’t want to be embarrassed if anyone finds out about you.
Give her a workable number or at least something less embarrassing (it is more socially acceptable for a 28 year old woman to have casual sex with a 34 year old man than with a 38 year old man).
Just pick the number that’s more likely to get you laid and go with it.
